FIREFIGHTERS are used to going the extra mile in the course of their duties, but three intrepid firemen have gone an extra 168.

Hyndburn station manager Neil Mark, Ribble Valley station manager Phil Whittaker, and community fire safety team boss Wes Truran endured horrid weather conditions as they visited every fire station in the county.

Over the course of five days, they walked through heavy rain and strong winds as they walked between the 39 stations for The Fire Fighters Charity, totting up a total of 168 miles and over £6,000 in donations.

The charity supports serving and retired firefighters, fire personnel, and their families, providing rehabilitation and support when sickness or injury strikes.

Phil, whose family has welcomed the charity's support in the past, said: "Ten years ago, me and my wife, Lyndsey, 46, had triplets.

"Unfortunately one, Joshua, was born with a heart defect and he died at 10 weeks old.

"During that time, The Fire Fighters Charity helped us out. We went to Harcombe House in Devon, which is a recuperation and rehabilitation centre.

"I have always supported them, but since then it has been even more of a drive for me."

Starting in Hornby on Saturday, the trio endured several unseasonally heavy downpours but, thanks to the brotherly spirit on show, as well as cameos from friends and colleagues, the trio completed their gruelling adventure on Wednesday in Darwen.

Phil, 47, said: "It started raining on Sunday morning when we were in Blackpool and it didn't stop again until Tuesday evening in Rawtenstall.

"On Tuesday morning, from Burnley to Bacup to Crown Point, the heavens opened and the rain was blowing sideways.

"It was like something out of a disaster movie. We all had our moments at different times, but we pushed each other through the bad bits."

Despite facing some friendly jibes from colleagues following the feat, Phil is happy he took part in the challenge.

"It was worth the blisters," he said. "It was a real test of mettle to get through those last few miles. The lads have been really supportive. I have had a bit of grief about the fact I have been limping about, but that's what you expect from firefighters."
