A VIOLENT, well-built man from Colne who stamped on a woman’s head after making unwanted advances has been jailed for 37 months.

Christopher Costello Jnr, 26, had made a number of improper and lewd comments towards Kayleigh McCabe before launching a sustained attack on her at his Thomas Street home, Burnley Crown Court was told.

Eyewitness Anthony Bridge believed that Costello ‘may well kill’ his victim and that the look in his eyes at the time ‘terrified him’, the court heard.

Several police officers were required to subdue Costello after he fled the scene, and he ended up grabbing a police Taser from a constable, and kicking one in the chest during a struggle.

Thomas was jailed by Judge Jonathan Gibson after admitting charges of assault, possession of a police Taser, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of amphetamines.

Stephen Parker, prosecuting, said the incident began on April 2 when Miss McCabe had arrived at the home of Mr Bridge, where the defendant had been drinking with the householder and his father, Christopher Costello Snr. Costello Jnr demanded that someone should visit a local shop to buy him beer and Mr Bridge swiftly complied.

The defendant began making ‘inappropriate comments’ towards Miss McCabe, which she rebuffed. She, along with Mr Costello Snr and Mr Bridge, ended up going upstairs.

The court heard the defendant pushed Miss McCabe down forcefully, so her head was trapped between a bed and bedside cabinet. Mr Bridge watched as Costello Jnr stamped on the back of her head two or three times.

Mr Parker said Costello Jnr was then seen to kneel down beside the woman and punch her four or five times.

Costello Jnr had served a number of prison sentences for robbery, attempted robbery, assaulting police officers and resisting arrest.
