PEOPLE planning to head to the Lancashire coastline this weekend are warned to expect bad weather and flooding.

The Environment Agency is urging people along the Lancashire and Cumbrian coast to remain vigilant as high tides, strong winds and waves may combine to bring a risk of localised flooding today and tomorrow.

Flood alerts are currently in force for Fleetwood to Blackpool and the Wyre Estuary in Lancashire and the Cumbrian coastline from St Bees to Silloth and then onto Gretna.

High tides, strong winds and large waves could lead to tidal spray and some overtopping of defences leading to flooding of low-lying land, roads and promenades.

Agency teams continue to be out on the ground, checking all the tidal flaps and flood defences.

Lee Preston of the Environment Agency said: “We continue to monitoring the situation closely with the Met Office and will issue flood alerts and warnings as required.

“It’s possible we could see some large waves and spray and urge people to take care near coastal paths and promenades and not to drive through flood water.

“People should also check their flood risk and keep up to date with the latest situation on the GOV.UK website at https://www.gov.uk/check-if-youre-at-risk-of-flooding or follow @EnvAgencyNW and #floodaware on Twitter for the latest flood updates.”
