A SCHOOL has been received a ratings boost after being hailed for its 'excellent careers advice' and 'highly effective safeguarding'.

Ofsted has upgraded Sir John Thursby College in Burnley from 'requires improvement' to 'good' following an inspection last month.

The Eastern Avenue school was praised in the report for putting in place 'robust systems' for checking pupils' progress after being told that feedback was 'inconsistent' two years ago in previous inspection.

Lead inspector Gena Merrett also found that the quality of teaching had improved since last time with particular strengths in safeguarding and personal development.

She said: "School leaders, including governors, have an accurate understanding of the school's strengths and areas for development.

"The quality of teaching has improved since the last inspection. It is good overall and some is outstanding.

"The personal development of pupils is a strength of the school, promoted within and beyond a broad and inclusive curriculum.

"Excellent careers advice and guidance ensures that pupils continue into appropriate education or training after Year 11.

"The arrangements for ensuring that pupils are properly safeguarded are highly effective. Pupils understand well how to keep themselves safe.

"Leaders have a strong focus on the progress of disadvantaged pupils and attainment gaps are narrowing.

"Pupils' attendance is excellent and their behaviour is good. The majority are polite with positive attitudes to learning."

The school was not judged to be 'outstanding' because a minority of teaching 'does not motivate pupils to make good progress', the quality of middle leadership was 'variable' and pupils have reported 'homophobic language' being used sometimes despite school leaders 'encouraging respect for diversity'.

Headteacher David Burton said: "We are delighted that inspectors feel we are well on our way to outstanding and with the school's 10th birthday this year, we are celebrating how far the school has come and looking forward to our brilliant future as a full, outstanding, community college serving our pupils and their families.

"I am delighted that it has become an oversubscribed school and has grown to offer a variety of courses that really interest students."

The school be hosting an open evening on Thursday, October 13, from 5pm to 7pm.
