FAST-FOOD chain Subway has announced that it’s to open a fifth restaurant in Blackburn, creating up to 10 jobs.

The American company, which makes hot and cold sandwiches, will launch its latest franchise at Blackburn railway station next month.

It currently has a presence in the town in Blakey Moor, Haslingden Road, Preston New Road and The Mall.

A Subway spokesman said that up to 10 new part-time and full-time jobs will be created from the new venture.

Last year the business announced that it would open four new restaurants in East Lancashire by 2016, with one now in The Mall and one to come in the railway station.

The other locations have not been confirmed.

Cllr Suleman Khonat, who represents Shear Brow on Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “I think it's fantastic to see a Subway store open at the railway station.

“It’s more variety for customers and it gives those going to and from the station a bit more choice for eating and drinking.

“I’m pleased to see that a space is being filled in the station and there will be more going on for passengers.

“There’s already a well-used shop but it’s nice to see something else.

“It’s great to see a big franchise extending their reach in Blackburn.

“We are clearly a place of interest and it’s obvious that there is space and need for another store.

“A lot of other Subway stores are open quite late, to 10pm and often in cities some are open 24 hours a day.

“I would like to see this one being open late as it would be very useful for train users to grab a bite to eat at the station after travelling at night.”

The station currently has a newsagents and a couple of vending machines.

In 1996, the first Subway store was opened in Brighton, with the 150th Lancashire store opening in Chorley last year.

A Subway spokesman said: “We are pleased to confirm that a new Subway store will be opening at Blackburn railway station in September.

“The new store will create up to 10 new part-time and full-time jobs in the area.

“Franchisees are business people who work to be active members of their communities.”

The date when the new resturant will be opened has not been confirmed.
