The war may have ended more than a decade earlier but in 1957 there was still a Civil Defence Force.

And Accrington played a key role in supporting it.

For the town was the base for the wonderfully named Food Flying Squad which was in charge of the mobile canteens which supplied meals and the obligatory mugs of tea whenever there was a major exercise around the county - as in this one in Lancaster in September 1957.

Volunteers worked alongside regular soldiers on this particular exercise but it looks as though the two canteen vans were kept hard at work throughout.
