This fascinating old photo shows a piece of Burnley’s history which is long gone.
Two Russian cannon from the Crimean War once stood in the grounds of the old grammar school at the junction of Colne Road and Bank Parade.
They were gifted to the town by General Sir James Yorke Scarlett, a hero of the Battle of Balaclava in 1854 who made his home in the town after marrying Miss Charlotte Hargreaves of Bank Hall.
The cannon were melted down for scrap as part of the war effort in 1941. A proposal was made in 1988 to replace them with replicas costing £10,000 but the plan was dropped by the town council.
