Labour's Shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has visited a Burnley breakfast club to set out the party’s ambition to deliver them in every primary school in England.

She was guest of honour on Friday at Cherry Fold Community Primary School in Cog Lane, alongside Oliver Ryan, Labour’s candidate for Burnley in the forthcoming general election.

Mrs Phillipson was visiting the school’s successful breakfast club, supported by the Greggs’ Foundation, to hear from staff, parents and children about the impact of the initiative.

Teachers and parents told her about the way the breakfast club has helped children and their families with better attendance and behaviour in class, higher standards, and to get a nutritious meal to start every school day.

Speaking after the visit, Mrs Phillipson said: “It was great to visit Cherry Fold with Oliver Ryan and to see the impressive and well-run breakfast club, supported by the Greggs Foundation, and how it forms such an important part of the school.

“Breakfast clubs are a key part of our ambition to drive high and rising standards in our schools – they support higher attendance and better behaviour, meaning higher attainment for the children.

"It’s about the club, as well as the breakfast.

"As well as delivering better life chances for children, they enable more work choices for parents.

“That is why the next Labour government is determined to deliver free and fully funded breakfast clubs in every primary school.

"We want the best start for all our children - not just to every day but to every life.”
