IT was a day to honour and remember at Ribblesdale Wanderers Cricket and Bowling Club as two events were in memory of former club stalwarts.

The club hosted a bowls competition in memory of Melvin Edmondson and a cricket challenge match in honour of Michael Britcliffe.

The idea of the Move-It Doubles bowls competition was to bring social members, non bowlers and bowlers together and teaming them up in pairs.

A total of 32 players took part, 16 bowlers and 16 social members/friends.

It was played in a round robin format with eight players per group playing three games of 15 up.

The winners of each group played in the semi-final. Group A winners, Hazel Hodder and Eric Wallace played group C winners Tracy Spencer and Alan Dewhurst with Hodder and Wallace winning 15-7. Group B winners, John Aubin and Jack Holt played group D winners Ann Barratt and Stuart Greenwood with Aubin and Holt winning 15-3.

In the final, Hodder and Wallace beat Aubin and Holt 15 –11.

“Everyone who took part said how much they had really enjoyed learning and taking part,” said organiser Alan Dewhurst.

“Many thanks to all the organisers who helped make this day such a special day in memory of Michael and Mel who will be sorely missed by all at Church Meadow.”

A 30-overs cricket match also place for the Michael Britcliffe Memorial in aid of both the Alzheimers Society and RWC&BC.

“For Michael, it was about giving kids the chance to play the great game ‘it’s not the winning, it’s the taking part’ was his key philosophy,” added Dewhurst.

Michael’s grandson Jordan Britcliffe captained the winning side beating Mark Thompson XI.
