GEORGE Boyd insists that Burnley will not let Saturday’s home defeat against West Ham hit their belief that they can survive in the Premier League.

The Clarets remain without a win in the top flight after a 3-1 loss at Turf Moor left them 19th of the Premier League table.

A home match against West Ham had been viewed as an opportunity for a first victory of the season but quickfire goals from Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia put them 2-0 down shortly after half time, before Carlton Cole confirmed the Clarets’ defeat.

But Boyd, who scored Burnley’s goal, pointed to an encouraging first-half performance and remained adamant that the result would not affect the confidence of the squad.

“The result is disappointing but I don’t think confidence will be knocked, because of the way we played,” said the £3m summer signing from Hull City.

“For large parts we dominated them and West Ham will be a top team. I’m sure they will be in the top 10 at the end of the season.

“There were loads of positives. We played some fantastic stuff first half and even in the second half we created chances. It was just a 10-minute spell we need to learn from.

“It’s devastating we lost because of the way we played, but at this level you're going to get punished for a lapse in concentration.

“If we had gone 1-0 up we could have scored two or three and the confidence would have been through the roof so we will keep believing.

“There is no doubt it’s going to come and two out of the next three games are at home, so there’s a great chance to get our first win.”

The Clarets return to action at home to Everton on Sunday, while Boyd’s former club Hull visit Turf Moor on November 8 after a trip to Arsenal.

Boyd’s close-range strike against West Ham was his first for Burnley but came with Sean Dyche’s side already 2-0 down.

He had hit the underside of the crossbar in the first half at 0-0, while Ashley Barnes was also denied by the woodwork late on.

Burnley have scored only four goals in eight league games so far this season.

“I need to chip in with as many goals as I can," he said.

"Hitting the bar was just the luck at the moment - my effort and Barnesy's. A couple of inches either side and we could have been coming away with three points.

"With the amount of chances we created in the first half, people are going to score goals.

“I have no doubt we will get the goals which will be enough to keep us in the division.

“The way we played in the first half, we dominated for large spells and the gaffer warned us they would come out with a bit of a response.

"Those two goals at the start of the second half killed the game really.

“We believed we could go and do it again for another 45 minutes, but the goals took it out of us a bit.

"But we came back again at 2-1 and even at 3-1 Barnsey hit the bar, so it’s good that we showed a bit of character.

"We kept coming back."

Full back Kieran Trippier said: "It's a lesson learned, it's a disappointing defeat.

"We dominated the first half but in the second half they got two early goals.

"It's just one of those things, it wasn't our day and things wouldn't go in the back of the net.

"But it's gone now and we have to move on to Everton."
