EAST Lancashire cycling star Steven Burke has been named in the Great Britain squad for the second round of the Track World Cup in London next month.

The Colne star is part of a strong team for the event at what was the Olympic velodrome where Burke won gold in the team pursuit two years ago.

Burke is named in the men's endurance squad alongside the three men - Andy Tennant, Mark Christian and Jon Dibben - with who he claimed silver in the last round of the Track World Cup in Mexico. Owain Doull is also included while Burke's Olympic gold medal winning team-mate Ed Clancy will be a non-travelling reserve.

One notable absentee is Sir Bradley Wiggins, who won the Tour de France and Olympic road time-trial gold at the London 2012 Olympics, and who plans to target the team pursuit on the track at the 2016 Rio Games.

The four-time Olympic champion won Commonwealth Games silver with England in the event in July before claiming the road world time-trial title in September.

The 34-year-old suggested the London World Cup, which takes place from December 5 to 7, would be a target at September's Tour of Britain, but now is unlikely to be seen in competitive action at the velodrome until 2015.

Laura Trott, Phil Hindes, Jason Kenny and Joanna Rowsell are selected, returning to the scenes of their Olympic triumphs in 2012.

British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton said: "We set ourselves in good stead at the Mexico round of the World Cup with some solid performances across the board and we’re entering a similar strength team in London with the aim of continuing the momentum and gaining valuable Olympic qualification points early on.

"The home round of the World Cup series is a competition the whole team looks forward to and the fact that this event is taking place in the Lee Valley VeloPark makes this event extra special for us.

"The crowd support during London 2012 was phenomenal and gave the team a huge lift so hopefully the public will get behind us once again and support us on our journey to Rio."
