SAM Vokes completed 90 minutes as Burnley’s development squad won 9-1 at Crewe Alexandra yesterday afternoon.

Michael Kightly and Marvin Sordell both scored hat-tricks as a strong Clarets side romped to a comfortable victory, in a game that saw Vokes continue his comeback from knee surgery.

It was the striker’s fourth appearance in successive weeks for the development squad, and his second 90 minutes.

Kightly collected a pull-back from Ross Wallace before slotting in the opening goal from the edge of the box in the seventh minute.

Matt Gilks then preserved Burnley’s lead with a penalty save.

Crewe did level in the 14th minute but Sordell put the Clarets back in front eight minutes later when he cut inside and fired in at the near post.

Kightly curled in his second goal to make it 3-1 just before the half hour mark after combining with Wallace again, and it was 4-1 in the 37th minute as the wide man completed his hat-tick.

Steven Reid advanced from right back before cutting the ball back to Kightly, who converted.

Sordell tapped in his second of the game after a goalkeeping error to make it 5-1 three minutes into the second half, before the forward followed Kightly by completing his treble in the 65th minute.

Sordell fired home through the keeper’s legs after another assist from Wallace.

Substitute Nathan Lowe added a seventh goal with a fine strike from 25 yards, before Danny Lafferty made it eight with a brilliant curling shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Vokes then flicked on for Cameron Howieson to complete the scoring with a half volley on 77 minutes.
