MATT Taylor’s much debated penalty miss aside, you have to ask if Burnley did enough to warrant a win on Saturday against a resurgent Leicester City.

Yes, we had the better chances, and yes, goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel made a couple of great saves his father would have been proud of.

But the central, towering defensive partnership of Rob Huth and Wes Morgan were never going to be troubled with aerial conflict; they needed to be beaten with pace by our faster players.

It’s a disconcerting statistic that the Clarets have only scored one goal in their last eight games with opposing clubs realising that a single goal will usually be enough to take all three points, as has been the case in our last three fixtures.

That’s why I think it’s time to ‘release the hounds!’, to run at defenders higher up the pitch in support of the front two, whoever they may be to add a pace injection.

One of those should be George Boyd, who covers more ground than any other player, has a turn of speed and can beat a man at close quarters to sniff out a goal.

Going back to the choice of penalty taker I do think Danny Ings would have scored given the way he thumped in his previous one against Aston Villa – although it has to be said Taylor was desperately unlucky with his attempt as it had the power, but not the direction, by about six inches.

Why am I so sure? Because the laws of physics scientifically decree that if a ball is struck with maximum velocity a goalkeeper cannot physically stop it, as the speed of flight is faster than the speed of thought, which all means that as long as it is projected anywhere within the goal post framework the only way the goalkeeper can save it is if it fortuitously hits him.

If picked, Matt Taylor would be my other choice to press forward against his old club West Ham, and maybe have the chance to atone for Saturday’s miss with the winning goal.

Upton Park certainly isn’t the fortress it was early season, and like ourselves the Hammers have only won two Premier League games since Christmas.
