HAVING said last week that Burnley has three of the fastest British Time Trialists, along comes another Burnley-born rider finishing an outstanding third in the British Time Trial Championships - writes DAVID BROWN.

Ryan Perry, 28, is an army captain and has been away from our local scene due to travelling but lives in Trawden.

In the Elite Men’s British Cycling Time Trial Championships at Cadwell Park, Leicestershire Ryan, who rides for the SportGrubKuota Team, was beaten only by the top professional Alex Dowsett – a Tour de France selection for the Movistar team – and second-placed Edmund Bradbury of NFTO.

Ryan even beat multi-time trial champion Matt Bottrill into fourth place.

His father, Steve, is a Pendle Forest Cycling Club member and Ryan plans to join him sometime in the future.

Two Burnley-based riders were in action over 50 miles on the A50 road between Derby and Stoke. Richard Bideau took second overall with a personal best of 1h 38m 39s – a Pendle Forest record – and just 10 seconds better than Steve Irwin’s third-placed 1h 38m 49s – a North Lancs Road Club record.

Only Bottrill beat them with his winning 1h 35m 53s time. Bideau and Irwin now sit seventh and eighth in the league of fastest ever 50-mile riders just nudging ahead of Graeme Obree.

Irwin won his club’s mid-week 10-mile event on the A59 Sawley-based course with a course record time of 20m 18s followed by Mark Haydock (21-57), Stuart Timmins (23-16) and come-back rider Clitheroe’s Guy Laycock (23-56).

At the Steven Burke Hub Sam Boast of Wheelbase Altura finished third in the Elite event with Ross Miller of Whalley based Nab Racing winning the fourth category race.

Nathan Hawthorn Cycle Sport Pendle won the under 16s with CSP’s Corinne Side first female with team-mate Kate Taylor first female under 14.

CSP’s Thomas Kenyon and Daniel Vincent were second and third in the under 12.

The Pendle Forest 10 had four of their own in the top placings with Gary Smith 22-35, Andrew Dent 24-15, Russell Marsden 24-30 and Steve Singleton 25-34.

Louis Szymanski of ABC Centreville won the Rossendale 10 in 23-59 then Chris Smith Condor RC 24-18, Richard Sagar NLRC 25-07 and Andy Horner Bury Clarion 24-28.

The final Sporting Courses event at Bolton-by-Bolton on Saturday is cancelled clashing with another non-related event in the village.
