LUKAS Jutkiewicz admitted defeats to lower league opposition were not ideal, but stressed the pre-season emphasis remains on work-rate and not results as Burnley build up to a new season.

After losing at League Two Accrington Stanley the previous weekend, the Clarets let a 2-0 lead slip at Chesterfield to suffer a late defeat against League One opposition on Saturday, either side of beating Scottish Championship side Rangers.

Having scored from the penalty spot against Stanley, Jutkiewicz was on target again at the Proact Stadium to take his summer tally up to three.

While he was disappointed in the overall outcome, he said the fitness work-out was the most important factor ahead of the big kick-off against Leeds in less than two weeks’ time.

But Burnley will be looking for improvements tonight against Graham Alexander’s Fleetwood Town (kick-off 7.45pm).

“It’s key at the moment that everyone’s out there putting a shift in and working hard for 90 minutes in order to be match sharp in two weeks,” said Jutkiewicz. “We’re not happy to lose any game, but it’s all about getting ourselves in the right condition for Leeds.

“You look all over the country and see lots of teams – so called underdogs – beating higher division teams in pre-season friendlies, and that happens every season. That’s not new.

“We’re not accepting it at all in the changing room, we’re not happy to get beat in any game we play in, but it is all about the fitness and making sure we respond in the league.

“Everyone from any club will have seen their teams getting freak results from pre-season, it’s not necessarily a sign of anything to come during the season.”

Jutkiewicz, who again played as the lone striker, feels the return of injured forwards Sam Vokes, Jelle Vossen and Marvin Sordell will make a difference.

The trio have been sidelined with minor knocks, but manager Sean Dyche is hopeful that all will be able to play some part at Highbury Stadium.

“It’s not ideal in terms of the whole squad, you want everyone as fit as possible and as much competition as you can get,” said Jutkiewicz.

“But for me I want to play as many minutes as I can do so I’m pleased to get a couple of 90s in this week.

“I want to play as many minutes as I possibly can, whether that’s up front on your own or up front in a two, you just want to be on the pitch for as long as you can to help the team.

“You want to be on the pitch and at the moment I am and hopefully I can get as much game time as possible.”

Of his pre-season goals, he added: “No matter what game you want to try and score.

“I’ve got (three) so far and hopefully I can get a couple more.”
