STRIKER Marvin Sordell and defender Luke O’Neill yesterday had their Burnley contracts cancelled by mutual consent.

Sordell only joined the club just over 12 months ago in a £600,000 move from neighbouring Bolton but became surplus to requirements after the Clarets signed four strikers this summer, albeit with Jelle Vossen being sold to Club Brugge after just eight weeks.

Sordell was hoping a reunion with former Watford boss Sean Dyche would help to reignite his career, but the former England Under-21 international struggled to make an impression during his time at Turf Moor.

The 24-year-old made 17 appearances in Burnley’s Premier League season, and four substitute appearances this term.

His only goal for the club came in the 4-2 FA Cup third round replay defeat at Tottenham in January.

Meanwhile, right back O’Neill has left Burnley three years after signing from Mansfield.

The right back was originally brought in by former boss Eddie Howe, but was given a new contract by Dyche in July last year.

However, he failed to break into the side ahead of Kieran Trippier.

O’Neill made just one league appearance for the Clarets, as a last minute substitute for Trippier in a 2-0 home win over Ipswich at the end of his first season.

He had loan spells with York, Southend, Scun-thorpe and Leyton Orient.

Since having his contract cancelled, O’Neill has signed a two-year deal with Southend.
