ANDRE Gray has backed Burnley to pick up momentum after earning their first back-to-back wins of the season.

And the 24-year-old is ready to play his part after the international break by making an impact on what is set to be his home debut against Sheffield Wednesday next Saturday.

The striker put fear into the Bristol City back line with his pace in his first game since joining the Clarets from Brentford, but the club record £6million man wasn’t able mark the occasion with a goal.

Gray is determined to open his account as quickly as possible, but admits the overall team outcome is the priority. And, for him, a win from this first game was the ideal start.

“It wasn’t our best performance I don’t think but that’s what it’s going to take to get out of this league so every point counts and we managed to get three from a good team,” said the marksman, who fired Brentford to the play-offs in his first Championship season last year.

“Last season it took us to get two wins on the bounce and get on a run and it just gets your confidence going.

“I think we’re only going to get better as the season goes on and I think we’ll peak at the right time.

“Everyone in the dressing room has got that promotion feeling so they know what it takes and I think Saturday proved the difference there will be. We’re not always going to play well but if we can get results like that away from home without playing well it will give us the best opportunity.

“That’s what it takes to get promoted - you won’t always play well but if you can grind out results then it’s all good.

“Now I think if we start playing well and better than we did on Saturday it’s going to help because we’re going into games knowing we don’t have to play our best to get a result, we know that the game can change like that.”

The goals in Burnley’s 2-1 win at Ashton Gate came in the first half and against the run of play, but Gray said that was an encouraging sign.

“We’re not always going to play well so if we can score goals from set pieces it can win you games,” he continued.

“To be solid at the back and not concede any set pieces and to go and score some as well is obviously good, and we’re going to need that throughout the season.”

And the striker said he had mixed feelings about the two-week international break.

“The break is frustrating for me because I want to play games and I want to keep playing after my first game. I want to keep going and start getting on the scoresheet,” he said.

“But at the same time it’s a chance for me to get that bit fitter and hopefully I can come back against Sheffield Wednesday at home and hit the ground running.

“I need to get fitter because it’s a completely different level of fitness that’s needed with what I’ve been used to last season and in pre-season. I think I’ll only get better with fitness and adapting to the way we play.

“I’ll go forward from there.”

And Gray, who started alongside Sam Vokes against the Robins, believes the selection of strikers will be a plus.

The department has been depleted in the last week with Jelle Vossen and Marvin Sordell both leaving, and a long-term injury for Lukas Jutiewicz but the new recruit feels the competition is still strong.

“We’re going to have time together in the next two weeks to get an understanding and I think partnerships will grow with all the strikers,” he said.

“I think we’ll get better throughout the season.”

Of the prospect of his home debut against the Owls, Gray added: “I can’t wait. It’s going to be a massive game for me and it will be good to play in front of the home fans. The away fans were outstanding with me, and hopefully I can give the home fans something to cheer about.”
