SAM Vokes believes his partnership with Andre Gray can be just as prolific as the promotion union he forged with Danny Ings.

The pair hit 41 Championship goals between them to fire Burnley into the Premier League in 2014/15 and after Vokes and Gray became the Clarets’ front pairing of five different combinations this season to get on the scoresheet in the same game, joint top scorer Vokes feels there is plenty more to come.

“He’s a very similar player to what Ingsy was, and also different I suppose because he works off the shoulder,” Vokes said.

“He showed on Friday with his goal that he can work off the back of defenders and create goals for us there and for both of us it was nice to get the goals and tick off the three points.

“When you both score you’re both buzzing and confident and it feels a good partnership. It would be nice to form that.

“It’s important that we work hard together and it pays off in games and obviously scoring goals helps that.”

On a personal note Vokes moved into joint-top scorer spot alongside Michael Keane after his third of the season secured the win at New York Stadium.

“I’m managing to catch up with Keano. You don’t really want to be chasing a centre half for top goalscorer!

“But it was nice to get another goal and keep chipping away.”

And Vokes is confident he can work well with Gray.

“It’s important that you get that going but there are the other lads as well with Rouwen (Hennings) and Longy (Chris Long) who can come in. We’re all different strikers and can give different qualities to the strike force.”

Gray returned after a one-game absence with a hamstring strain, while Rouwen Hennings was not involved in the matchday squad after his wife went into labour.

“Andre obviously missed the last game and managed to get nearly 90 minutes in which is great for his confidence in his hamstring,” said Vokes, who has now teamed up with Wales in the hope that by the time he returns for domestic duty the Red Dragons will have qualified for Euro 2016.

Chris Coleman’s side need just two points from their games against Bosnia and Andorra to guarantee their place.

“It’s exciting times being involved there and a camp we’re really looking forward to,” Vokes added.

“We were unlucky not to qualify last time so it would be nice to wrap it up in the next two weeks.”

Of going into the international break on the back of three points for the Clarets, and scoring the winner, he said: “It’s always nice to get that because if you don’t get the win going into that period it’s two weeks to wait until the next game. It was nice to seal that on Friday.

“It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet, obviously with the circumstances as well after the brought it back to 1-1. To get the win, it was nice.

“It’s a massive three points.”

Of Hennings’ absence, manager Sean Dyche said: “He came with us and Billy Mercer kindly drove him back after the contractions started.

“Family first with me, we turned him around, got straight back and hopefully all is well.”
