BURNLEY striker Sam Vokes is hoping to help Wales achieve history over the next five days with the Dragons on the brink of qualifying for a major tournament for the first time in 58 years.

Chris Coleman’s side need just one point from their final two games to secure a spot at Euro 2016 in France next summer.

And Vokes, who will be hoping to add to the 35 caps he has won so far, in tomorrow’s showdown with Bosnia, believes landing a place at the Championships would be a major achievement.

“It was a long time ago and it’s great to be part of a squad that’s pushing for that. It’s close,” he said.

“It could be something special. It’s been talked about a lot. The team’s really gelling and it’s a great group to be involved in.

“They are two tough games but two games we feel confident going into.

“The first one’s away in Bosnia, which will be a tough game, and then Andorra back at home on the following Tuesday so they’re games we’ll be looking to take the points from.”

Vokes has come off the bench in Wales’ last four Euro 2016 qualifiers, with Hal Robson-Kanu the preferred striker for Coleman.

Although he admits it would be nice to get a start against Bosnia tomorrow or Andorra on Tuesday, having scored three league goals this season, Vokes is aware he has to bide his time.

“That would be nice,” Vokes said of starting for his country.

“But there’s a team there that have played since before my injury so it’s a team that has formed a relationship. Just to be a part of that is a great environment at the minute.

“You’re training with a different group and learning to play a different way with world class players so it’s good to be involved there.

“If we can seal it this week would be phenomenal. To be a part of something like that, we’ll obviously make history.”

Vokes headed off to international duty with a winning goal against Rotherham for the Clarets a week ago and said it was great to leave Turf Moor on the back of a victory.

“It’s always nice to get that because if you don’t get the win going into that period it’s two weeks to wait until the next game,” said the 25-year-old.

“It was nice to seal that on Friday.

“It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet, obviously with the circumstances as well after the brought it back to 1-1. To get the win, it was nice.

“It was a massive three points.”

Vokes will be back at Gawthorpe towards the end of next week as Sean Dyche’s side prepare for three games in a week, which culminates with the derby at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, October 24.

And he hopes he will be bouncing back into training after helped Wales book a place in France next June and July.

“It would be nice because we’ve got three tough games when we come back, Bolton, Forest and obviously the big one the following week so it would be nice to come back having done something good there,” he added.
