BURNLEY boss Sean Dyche insists respect and honesty are important values to his Clarets squad as they sit top of the Championship’s fair play league.

With just two games to go this season Dyche is yet to lose a player to suspension this term, with the Clarets picking up just 48 bookings in 44 Championship fixtures, and not a single red card.

Every other team in the league except Wolverhampton Wanderers have had at least nine more bookings, with Wolves picking up just 49 and a solitary red card.

Ben Mee and Joey Barton top Burnley’s disciplinary charts, with nine bookings each, but 33-year-old Barton’s record is much improved since he arrived at Turf Moor, having picked up 31 yellow cards and four red cards in 96 games for Queens Park Rangers.

Both Mee and Barton picked up their fifth yellow card after the cut-off point for a one-game suspension, while a 10th booking of the season for either would now arrive after the cut-off for a two-game ban.

While Dyche insists it isn’t essential that his side lead the way in the fair play stakes, it is important to him that they play the game in the right way.

“It’s part of the way we generally work with the players, because we don’t have meetings about it, I can assure you,” he said.

"It’s not my top requirement to be top of the fair play league, but I would say we work with respect and honesty, and I like that.

“I think they are valuable commodities to have as a person and footballer, I don’t over-egg it, but I do speak to the players about those values as part of what we do, and that rubs off on conducting yourself in the right manner, not going over the top with gamesmanship.”

The Clarets also topped the disciplinary charts two years ago when they were promoted from the Championship to the Premier League.

On that occasion Dyche’s side picked up just 49 yellow cards and two reds, with Tom Heaton sent off for two bookings early in the season at Brighton and Michael Duff given his marching orders for the same reason at Huddersfield.

In their Premier League season 12 months ago they were eighth in the fair play charts after 64 bookings and two sending-offs.
