BURNLEY goalkeeper Tom Heaton is aiming to build on his international debut after becoming the Clarets first capped England player since 1974.

The 30-year-old replaced Fraser Forster for the final few minutes of England's 2-1 win over Australia at Sunderland's Stadium of Light on Friday night to record his first appearance in a Three Lions shirt.

And the Burnley skipper is now hoping to earn another chance to impress Roy Hodgson.

“The next goal is to get on again," said Heaton who led Burnley to the Championship title this season.

"That’s certainly my ambition, it doesn’t stop here and while I’ll enjoy the moment you set out in football as a kid to play for England and now I want more of it."

Heaton is all but certain to be named in Hodgson's final squad of 23 for this summer's European Championships in France when that is revealed on Tuesday.

The Turf stopper will be joined by No.1 Joe Hart and Southampton's Forster in the squad and could yet see more action before the tournament begins when England host Portugal at Wembley on Thursday.

Heaton admits he is relishing his involvement in the national squad.

He added: "We’ve got a fantastic group here and there is a great atmosphere amongst us so I’m excited to be involved in it.

“Joe and Fraser are both top class goalkeepers in their own right and the goalkeeping coach Dave Watson has been brilliant with me.

“It’s a good working environment with a competitive edge that is positive in driving the team forward.”

The Chester-born goalkeeper has now represented England at every level since Under-16s and his international debut caps a remarkable rise with Heaton facing League One football when Burnley signed him from relegated Bristol City in 2013.

“It's been quite a journey after leaving United a few years and playing every level of league football," said Heaton who started every league game this season. "It’s great to get to this level and play so I’m over the moon.

“I’m proud of the achievement of being the first England player since 1974 to be capped at Burnley.

“My dad, my wife, my father in law and (Clarets teammate) David Jones were all here as well as a few other friends so it’s brilliant of them to make the effort.

“My son is in bed unfortunately but to have everyone here was fantastic for me as that’s been my network of support over the years which made the moment special."
