SEAN Dyche hailed Burnley’s improvement in the final third after the Clarets chalked up a second win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Watford.

The Burnley boss stuck with the three-man midfield he had used in defeat at Leicester just over a week ago, but at Turf Moor his side carried a much greater threat going forward and were full value for their margin of victory over a previously in-form Hornets side.

It was the second time this season Burnley had won 2-0 at Turf Moor, but while the shock win over title contenders Liverpool was a backs-to-the-wall display, Monday night was a far more dominant performance.

“It was a different performance, Liverpool are a fine side, and that was a defensive performance with resilience and organisation,” said Dyche.

“This was more open, we wanted to take the game on, grip the game and take on the challenge in a different way.

“We wanted to be productive. We know we have to be more productive in the top third, and that was quite evident, getting into better crossing positions, putting more crosses in, with more quality, and they will be important factors going forward.”

Dyche made just two changes from the team which collapsed to defeat at Leicester, with the enforced change of Sam Vokes coming in for the suspended Andre Gray, and Johann Berg Gudmundsson replacing Scott Arfield.

Dyche admitted he could have made more changes, but was happy to be rewarded by the players he backed.

“I stood by a few players who I felt I could have changed, but I try and be fair and give them a chance once I have a side settled in my mind and they delivered,” said Dyche.

“At the end we got slightly on the back foot, nothing major, but we contained them pretty well, we didn’t find as many passes out of defence, but other than that I was very happy.

“It was a good mixture of quality play, playing into the top third quicker and better than we have been doing, which I emphasised to the players, but also that nice, solid assurance in a good back five performance and if you glue that together with energy and desire it’s a good mixture.”
