BLACKBURN kicked off their Regional One North West campaign with a 10-try 62-15 win against Nantwich but director of rugby Dino Radice is looking for his side to get rid of the open-day rustiness as soon as possible.

While Radice was happy with the overall performance and result he admitted his side will need to iron out the errors or they will be punished by better sides.

“It was a great day, the sun was out and the club house was full,” said Radice.

“It was a good win against a side who, once all their new players have settled in, will cause a lot of problems in this division.

“We scored some good tries but we also made a lot of errors and gave the ball away to easily.

“You could put that down to rustiness and it being the opening game of the new season but it is something we are going to have to work on.”

Northwich lined up with 11 new players in their starting line-up - majority from overseas - so they were a bit disjointed and Blackburn capitalised and looked comfortable as they opened up a 19-0 lead.

But as the half wore on, it was more even and the visitors scored a nicely worked try.

Blackburn responded with a try only for Nantwich score a second as the home side messed up a scrum in their own 22

A fourth Blackburn try saw them lead 29-10 at half time.

While Nantwich appeared to grow in confidence thanks to their two tries, Blackburn dampened their hopes of a comeback as they ran in four unanswered tries early in the second half.

Nantwich did cross for a third try but as they pushed for a four-try bonus point, Blackburn defended well, held out and ended the game with another try.

Pleasing for Blackburn was they had nine different try scorers - Jake Foster crossing for a brace while Josh Malkinson, Leon Fifield, Thomas Mayoh, Josh Jarrold, Alex Evans, Jack Granby, Marcus Farnworth and Lewis Kincart all touched down.

Fifield finished with a personal haul of 13 points after kicking four conversions with Jarrold slotting over two more.

Burn head to Sandbach on Saturday before entertaining local rivals Rossendale the week after and Radice is looking for a marked improvement.

“We need to step it up now,” he said. “A lot of teams have strengthened their squads and have brought in a lot of overseas players.

“We go to Sandbach on Saturday which will be a tough game before playing Rossendale at home, a nice early local derby for us.

“They have been one of the sides who have brought in a lot of new players so we know we are going to have to be on top of our game and make sure we keep mistakes and errors to a minimum.”
